Digital Storytelling in an EFL Classroom!

Creating a digital story can be a difficult task for students in terms of clarity, interest, and self-presentation. Not only that, but it could also get them upset and frustrated when they see or hear themselves on camera for the first time. However, you have to keep in mind that this assignment in specific is going to have a huge impact on your teenage EFL learners' oracy skills and motivation and can be very useful in terms of visual, global, and digital literacy. (Hughes and Robertson, 2010)

I would definitely consider this assignment with my teenage intermediate/advanced Armenian students as it will undoubtedly be a very frustrating and tough experience for them but will still manage to help in developing the following kinds of literacies:

  1. Visual Literacy: improve their ability of interpretation, negotiation, and a better understanding of the information presented in the form of an image.
  2. Global Literacy: improve learners' understanding and interpretation skills of "universal" perspectives.
  3. Digital Literacy: improve learners' ability to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information using communication technologies.

This picture pretty much gives an overall meaning of the benefits of having digital storytelling as an assignment for your EFL learners.
